With temperatures reaching 70 degrees and clocks jumping ahead one hour, the Upper Perkiomen Valley began to slowly transition from Winter to Spring. Right on schedule was the annual Philadelphia Flower Show sponsored by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society.
On March 11, 2016, the St. Philip Neri Catholic Family Life Center sponsored a bus trip to this beautiful show for 37 friends and families of the parish. We arrived at the Philadelphia Convention Center at about 1:30 p.m. and found ourselves immediately transformed to the desert of Yellowstone National Park.
This year’s show theme was “Explore America – 100 Years of the National Park System”. These landmarks included Yellowstone, Yosemite, Arches, Brice Canyon, Lincoln’s Birthplace, as well as some of the lesser known parks. The beautiful displays depicting the native flora of these parks dazzled our senses as we spent hours walking among them.
Numerous presentations and hands on activities were a part of the day if you chose to participate. We were told that this year’s show had more vendors than anytime in the past. For your home garden, you had the choice of many different flowers, bulbs, garden statues, flags and stakes. Kemp’s offered 2 dozen cut roses for only $10.00! Just add some baby’s breath and you have a wonderful bouquet of colorful cut flowers.
With such a long day you are bound to get hungry. Another special treat came from just across the street at the Reading Terminal Market. Bakeries, pretzels and chocolates alone made you hungry. With so many different eateries offering specials (and snacks) it was tough to purchase food from only one vendor.
As our bus worked its way through rush hour traffic we arrived at the Catholic Family Life Center about 7:00 p.m. Judging from the many positive comments once we were back it may be wise to plan another trip to this magnificent event next year.
